Making the Diagnosis

In order to diagnose your condition, your doctor will likely ask about your medical history, perform a physical examination, and analyze your blood.

If you have three out of the following five health risks, it is likely that you have metabolic syndrome:

  • excess body weight (waist circumference greater than 46 inches for men and greater than 40 inches for women)
  • high blood pressure (greater than 130/85 mmHg)
  • triglycerides (blood fats) greater than 1.7 µl/L
  • low good cholesterol (HDL) (less than 1 µl/L for men and less than 1.2 µl/L for women)
  • fasting blood sugar (glucose) greater than 6.1 µl/L
